Introduction to a Pre-Med Biologist

In this blog post, I'll be writing a few things about myself in order for you to get to know me better!

I am currently a senior at the University of Oklahoma, and I am majoring in Biology. I am currently in the process of applying for medical school, so think happy thoughts for me! You may be asking yourself, "Why is a science major taking a class in mythology and folklore?" Well, I love to expand my horizons and not limit myself to one certain subject.

I have two older sisters, Courtney and Chelsea, that I consider my best friends. My other best friend and soul mate is my 8 year old (on August 20th) golden doodle, Mercedes (or Cedie). In total, my family has six dogs: Mercedes, Bentley, Raider, Jake, Boomer, and Bella. Also, I have a pet Betta fish named Betta Mayfield!

I love reading books about medicine. I am currently reading, "Better" by Atul Gawande. However, I also just received, "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child", so I can't wait to get into that!

I love all kinds of music, and I am constantly playing something on my Spotify account. Currently, my favorite song is “Cold Water” by Justin Beiber, but that will probably change by the time I am finished writing the blog post!

This past summer I was able to travel to Panama City, Panama with the Global Brigades for a medical mission trip. We did some community service for the first couple days- building showers and getting people access to clean water in order to promote sanitary practices in the communities. For the remaining time of the mission, we were able to open and run a free clinic for the Panamanian people. We distributed life-saving medication and ran a dental clinic, where we provided teeth cleaning treatments and preformed tooth extractions. I loved getting the opportunity to serve people outside of my “bubble”, and I hope to learn more about global medicine and how to serve others!

I hope this gives you a little picture of me and what I’m passionate about. If you have any questions, feel free to comment below!

  1. I figured that Cedie in your story was probably a real dog name, Emily! Maybe Cedie can make an appearance in other stories you write this semester. Or some other dogs from your dog family: wow! And thanks for all the pictures too!

Atul Gawande: he is such a great writer! My husband has been a fan of his for years, and we both read his book about dying (Being Mortal). Powerful stuff, and definitely important for doctors to know and ponder.

And I hope this class can be part of your education-for-global-medicine. A lot of students expect this course to be all about Greece and Rome, and it can be for people who are really passionate about Greco-Roman mythology... but it is also a class where you can read stories from literally all over the world. I hope you will have fun looking at all those options and possibilities! :-)

  2. Hi Emily :) I'm Sara - I'm a microbio major. I'm taking this class because I needed an upper division humanities class lmao!
That's really cool that you got to go to Panama City! I've been there (& Altos del Maria), but I mostly just got drunk at the beach lol, but what you did sounds a lot cooler. I wasn't a huge fan of Panama, but I'd go back if I could do something helpful like you were able to do! Sounds very rewarding :)
Also, dang y'all have a lot of dogs! It must be hectic at your house sometimes (especially at dinner time!), but I bet it's really fun too. I just have one dog, and he likes it that way. He doesn't really like other dogs much, or he'll just try to "mount" them, it's embarrassing haha.

  3. Wow I am also majoring in biology, but I am pre-dent. I am taking this class because I love the idea of twisting stories and their plots and also because I need the credit haha.
For a minute I thought I read Panama City Beach and thought that would be crazy cause that is where I was at for the summer. But PC is awesome too, I always wanted to go on one of the medical brigade trips, but never had the time. Love the name of your dogs and especially of your betta fish, that is hilarious. Can't wait to read your posts and stories as we get further into this course.

  4. Hey, I'm also a Biology pre-dental major! What a coincidence we are all in the same group. Anyway, I am pretty jealous that you got to help out with the Global Brigades trip because I have wanted to do that since freshman year and have not had the opportunity. Mason Dicks is a good friend of mine, and he went last summer too.

Anyway, I look forward to sharing stories with you this semester!

  5. Hey Emily!
Wow, your introduction was very impressive. Your dog is so cute! I have a four month old kitten named Oliver and I love him to bits. I also love science and found interest in the book you are reading. I might look into that! Good luck on your medical school applications. You'll do great!

  6. Hello Emily,
I can appreciate the work and dedication you have put forward to get the opportunity to apply to medical school and the continued dedication it will take to get to complete your doctorate. I am currently apply to law school. Your picture of your human and dog family is adorable! I have two shitzus and a bulldog, oh and seven kids. It is a pleasure to meet you and I look forward to reading your stories.

  7. Hi Emily, I think it is awesome that you are wanting to go to medical school. I am a microbiology major who was a doing a pre-medical degree, but decided that I liked research much more. To each their own. Do you know what field of medicine you want to pursue?

  8. Hi Emily! I really enjoyed your introduction. I love learning about other people and their interests, so I really liked that you included lots of pictures on your page- it made me feel like I know you! In your first paragraph, you included that you are taking this class because you don’t like limiting yourself, which I think is a great way to look at things. I also loved reading about your mission trip, I went on one to Trinidad not long ago and had the best experience, I'm so glad yours was so meaningful, too!

  9. Nice to meet you Emily! My roommate is actually a senior Biology student as well, maybe you know her?

But anyway, I would also consider my best friends to be my sisters! I can't imagine what I'd do without them, they’re the best and we talk everyday.

And that’s so cool that you got to go to Panama City! It must have felt really good to help the people there!

Good luck with medical school! I know you’ll get in!

  10. Ah, wow, your time at Panama City looks like it was amazing. It’s always something special when people can pursue what they love while and help others in the process, and it seems like you guys definitely made an impact on the community you visited. Very cool.

Also, I had to laugh when I got to the bit about all of your dogs, because my family’s got an eerily similar animal situation going on: six dogs, including two Yorkies and a Golden Doodle. Every time one of the Yorkies goes for the Golden Doodle’s throat, I kind of cringe and wait for the massacre, but the Golden Doodle seems to be just as clueless about his size as the Yorkies are about theirs, haha.

It was nice meeting you, and best of luck with med school!

  11. Hi Emily! I love your post! I adore that it told us so much about you as a person and didn't just cover all of the formalities! I love your adorable fish! My roommate actually got a pet fish yesterday. Hers is blue though. I am from the Indian Epics class, but it was great to meet you! Also, I hope that we will get to know each other despite the fact that we are in different classes! Good luck for med school and for the rest of the semester!

  12. Hi! I think it's so cool that you are majoring in biology. I have always had an interest in science but I'm just to scared to do something like that. It's probably a lot of work, but it's so cool that you're passionate about it! I also really like reading and I'm so excited to read your stories this semester!

  13. Hey Emily!
It’s always great to meet people with the same major as mine. When I talk to my other friends that are business majors they never understand what I’m talking about half of the time. Also, you have so many dogs and they are all so cute! I’m jealous. I think it’s great you got to go on the medical mission trip. I have a couple of friends that went and said it was different but they loved the experience. I love helping people so I should have signed up for it. Maybe next time! I look forward to reading more of your stories!

  14. Hey Emily, I have to admit it looks like working at the clinic was a lot of fun! The children look so cute and I am sure Panama City was even better. It is interesting to know that you are a Biology major going to medicine, I wish you a lot of luck in that one, heard it was not easy. Anyway, thanks for sharing and I look forward to your future posts.

  15. Hi Emily! Nice to finally meet you and I have to say that your major and your work is fascinating. It’s not often you come across others that are willing to help others. I wish you lots of luck on medical school, there is no way I could do that. I love Science, but hospitals and all that... No way! It’s also very nice that you are still very opened minded about opportunities at OU.

  16. Hey Emily! It is nice to meet you! First off, let me tell you how awesome the name Betta Mayfield is for a beta fish! That is literally genius! I think it interesting that you are a biology major and choose to take this class! It is a great way to have fun while diversifying your skills! I look forward to reading your work and I hope that it includes stories of your dogs!

  17. Hello Emily,

You have such a beautiful drive and passion for medicine. Your trip to Panema looks like an amazing opportunity to give back to the community. I think your pet names are clever, and like the others who have commented, your Betta Mayfield is hilarious.

  18. Hi Emily! I am also a senior, but I am currently finding jobs – not applying for med school! I am so jealous that you have so many pets. Both of my parents hate pets so I did not have any growing up. I also love reading and listening to music. I’m assuming you have read the other Harry Potter books since you are reading the Cured Child, correct? Anyways, I hope you are enjoying the class!

  19. Emily,
Nice to meet you! Good luck with MCAT and application for med school! I know that can be stressful. You have quite a large family, dogs included. I'm sure it can get crazy with all of those personalities under the same roof. It sounds like your experiences in Panama were incredible. I love to travel, and I've been able to do some construction on an orphanage in Nicaragua. There is nothing better than meeting people from different cultures and seeing the universal sign of joy in their smiles. And haha, Betta Mayfield for Heisman!
